Growth Groups

Growth Groups provide a dedicated space for adults to come together in faith and fellowship, offering a meaningful opportunity to delve into scripture and faith questions. Some groups examine the teachings from the previous Sunday’s message engaging in a thoughtful exploration of scripture passages, fostering discussions that encompass not only the scriptures themselves but also the sermon’s insights. Other groups use traditional bibles study and other resources to explore the intersection of life and faith.

There are several Growth Groups that meet during the week, typically in the fall and spring months.

Bible Studies

Beholding: Deepening Our Experience in God

A 5-session study by Strahan Coleman, led by Rosemary Goodall, meets on 1st & 3rd Tuesdays, 6:30–7:30 pm, from September 16 to November 18 in the Parlor.

This study invites participants to move from a transactional experience with God to a transformational friendship through prayer. How can time with God become a source of peace in a loud and distracting world? In Beholding, spiritual director and poet Strahan Coleman guides readers to experience the joy of simply being with God, not just working for Him. As participants practice resting in God’s presence, prayer becomes a place not only of seeking but of becoming.

Beholding is available online in paper and ebook/Kindle formats at Cokesbury.com, Christianbook.com, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.

The Way of Discernment – A 10-week study

Do you yearn to hear the Holy Spirit’s guidance? Are you seeking direction in vocation, life changes, or matters of belief, ethics, and faithful living? How do we discern God’s guidance for personal and congregational decisions?

Companions in Christ: The Way of Discernment by Steve Doughty offers a biblical, theological, and practical framework for understanding the practice of discernment. This 10-week study will be led by Todd Jackson and Teresa Hrab on Monday evenings at 6:00 pm in the Conference Room, FH20, beginning October 6.

The Participant’s Guide is available online at Cokesbury.com, Christianbook.com, and Amazon.com.

Resident Aliens by Stanley Hauerwas and William Willimon explores how the Church can become the body of Christ and transform the world by embracing its scandalous, Jesus-centered tradition. The 25th anniversary edition (2014) offers a prophetic vision for how the Church can regain vitality, confront its malaise, nourish souls, and stand firmly against the illusions, pretensions, and eroding values of today’s culture.

Renowned 21st-century theologian Stanley Hauerwas and UMC Bishop Will Willimon examine the nature of the Church and its relationship to the surrounding culture. Retired UMC pastor Rev. Randy Smith will lead a community discussion on Sunday evenings, 5:00–6:30 pm, in the Conference Room, FH20, beginning September 21. Everyone is welcome to join or simply listen in on the conversation.

The book is available from online retailers in paper and ebook/Kindle formats.

Older Adults

Forever 55

Forever 55 is a group for EVERYONE in our church family (and friends) who have reached the milestone age of 55. Once you reach this milestone, you are always part of the group!

We gather monthly on the 3rd Thursday for a catered lunch, which includes a program of interest or entertainment and a celebration of that month’s birthdays. In addition to our regular lunches, we enjoy exciting outings and field trips to local venues, farms, plays, and other special events, including our Annual Christmas Party.

Our committee strives to keep lunch prices affordable, but please know that everyone is welcome regardless of ability to pay.

To join our notification list and receive updates about upcoming events, please send your name(s) and a working email address (or two) to Sandy Bailey at sbailey4750@gmail.com or call 864-421-4709.

TR Fellows meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 10:30 am in the parlor of the Family Life Center. For more information, email Charlie Crenshaw.
